Biography

Charles Quinn Petty, Sr.(67) was born September 20, 1830 in Gaffney, Cherokee County, South Carolina to George and Missaniah Smith Camp Petty. He was married to Sarah Jane Cobb on December 28, 1852. He resided in Gaston County, North Carolina, where he was a farmer, prior to enlisting at age 31. He served in North Carolina Troops from 1861-1865 in CO. H, 49th Regiment, N. C. Troops. He was elected Captain on March 22, 1862. Reported present or accounted for from Novenber, 1862 through December, 1863.  Wounded in the shoulder at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia in May, 1864.  Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1864.  Appointed Major on August 5, 1864 and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment. He was wounded  on December 14, 1864, "during a mortar shelling."  Surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865.
